Stories of the Stars - Silver Scroll I
When did he end up like that?
He couldn’t remember how to live in another way.
How did he even live before?
He volunteered to become a castle guard because he was rather lazy, and didn’t want to spend all his days running around chasing prey and fighting.
He was assigned to guard the basement of the castle. Hilarious, isn’t it? Nobody goes there, ever. Why would anybody guard it? Well, not that he minded it, he could slack off all he wanted there.
At first he felt kinda guilty. He did all he could to avoid his responsibilities, but he still wanted to be loyal to the queen, what he did made him feel like he was the worst subject possible.
But then he met her, cause apparently that place wasn’t all empty. There was a library there, that very few grifix knew of, and she spent her life in there, deciphering old scripts and stuff. Who would’ve thought there was such a place in the castle?
He soon found himself running errands for her, cause he was bored as hell and didn’t mind helping her.
But now it felt like that was his whole life’s purpose. Waking up, going to meet her, sleep. And he couldn’t remember when it became like that.
Was it love?
He didn’t think so. It wasn’t like he desired it, he just felt like he could not possibly live otherwise. He felt tied to her.
Dusk Garden was a rather strange individual. To everyone she seemed all nice, kind and happy, but truth was she didn’t care about anybody, she was faking it all. She had long lost the ability to care. About others, about herself, about anything. She was forcing herself to look like she had a normal mind to everyone, yet she was painfully aware and indifferent about the absurdity of her knowledge addiction. She cared about one thing, and one thing only, and that was knowledge. She began unraveling the mysteries of the library as a young filly, but she soon found herself desiring bigger and bigger knowledge. Her eyes didn’t hold the light of life in them. She saw life so objectively there was nothing to wonder about, nothing to desire, nothing to love.
If only they could fall in love with each other, maybe they could be saved. But he was dependent on her, and she was chasing prey too big to be caught.
“We both know our life is already over, Silver…”
She whispered to him.
“It is only you who can still be saved…”
But how could he be saved? He already gave up on his life, it was hers now.
“Swim back once it’s over. Tell them my story. Make sure nobody falls in the same hole I have.”
In the dark deep hole she met the Monster.
In the dark deep hole she told her her wish.
The Poisoned Water spread around, surrounding them.
For her to tell Dusk all her knowledge she demanded the highest price of all.
For every year, month and day to be traded for a moment of ultimate knowledge.
His eyes wide open, his mind slowed down.
“You say I can still be saved, but I’m far from being able to go back. Without you I know not how to live. My hole may just be deeper than yours, for I do not care about you, only myself. This will destroy you worse than the trade you just did, but I cannot allow death to take you from me.”
Her breath was gone but he knew something she didn’t think of. He grabbed her body and swam towards the surface. What he was going to do was going to cost him nothing, yet more than what she paid. It was going to cost him all of eternity. All of his life, all of her life, they were going to be gone forever, and one moment alone will be stretched till the end of time. That one moment for them to live in, together, forever.
They were never going to be free.
If they were dead before, now what were they?
Whatever it was, it was far worse than death.
They were slaves, with no way of ever being free.
But they were together.
The kiss of eternity woke her up, and took his freedom once more.
