Stories of the Stars: Frozen Mountain II

The two cubs were sitting on a bench, far from the noisy crowd. That day it was a wedding in the village, and every grifix celebrated like a star fell on top of their house. Even the Queen came out, which happened very rarely, and she was soon sucked into the middle of the happy crowd. It was a strange thing to see happen to Eclipsa… but overall it was clear that the union of two grifix was a big event.

Selenara was staring at the crowd, as she spoke to Frozen Mountain:

‘Is love… really that great?’

‘I guess so…’ he replied.

Then she sat in silence for a few minutes, keeping staring at the crowd.

‘Do you want to find someone to spend your life with, have children and all?’ She asked him all of a sudden, still staring at the crowd. Then she looked at him and added: ‘I’d like it if I could do that… having children run around my hooves… but I cannot.’ At that moment he could perceive a drop of sadness in her eyes.

‘No. I never wanted that. My future is here - serving you.’ He told her.

‘Really?’ Small drops of tears appeared at the corner of her eyes. ‘Even when all of my friends will find lovers and leave me, when everybody around me will find their pair, will you still be here with me?’

‘Yes, my Queen. I’ll never leave your side.’

‘Thank you, Mountain.’ Her eyes were filled with tears but she smiled. He was happy too. Everything that he said was true. He never wanted to leave her side. He never wanted a family.

On the other side of the plaza, another cub was sitting alone, looking bored at the crowd. She yawned then stood up and walked towards the Healer’s Hut. Love had no meaning for her, she too wasn’t allowed to share someone’s feelings ever. Still she was a bit lonely, but not for long.
