Stories of the Stars: Frozen Mountain item story

Frozen Mountain walked along the hallway, a little pissed off. Ever since he walked out of his room that morning he couldn’t find Selenara in any of the usual places she always spent time in at that time of the day. That completely messed up his schedule! He couldn’t stand such disarray. Moreover, it wasn’t like he didn’t know the cause of this. Earlier he saw Black Sunset, the totally disorganized and undisciplined healer disciple, walking in through the front door. He couldn’t stand that grifix. Whenever she showed up, all his plans were turning into a mess and the order he worked so hard to build would crumble. It was clear as the daylight that she was the reason behind Selenara’s disappearance today.

“She must be doing something unfitting to the Queen apprentice!” He thought to himself. “Perhaps she gave her the wrong food… or made her wear the dress she was supposed to wear tomorrow instead of the today one! Or worse! Maybe she brought her a completely new, unapproved outfit!”

Under the influence of these dark thoughts, he sped up towards Nara’s room, his worry growing bigger and bigger each step, like a tree growing out of his throat. Finding himself in front of the door, he barely could bring himself to knock, scared of what he might find behind that door. All that chaos and uncertainty had no place in the castle.

When he finally knocked at the door, the answer didn’t come too soon. After a few seconds of quiet, that felt like an eternity to him, the door  s l o w l y  opened, the dark face of the healer disciple showing up behind it, with a creepy grin covering her face. Then she quickly shoved the door open, letting it forcefully kick the wall.

The scene behind the door looked like it came out of Frozen Mountain’s darkest nightmares. Wool and feathers were shoved all over the floor, along with sponges and needles for felting. Ah, the chaos and disorder! Frozen Mountain could faint at the sight of that, but he pulled himself together. It wouldn’t have been professional to do such a thing.

“Ah, Frozen!” Selenara exclaimed with a clear, innocent smile. “How wonderful to have you here! Come take a look at this marvelous craft that Black Sunset taught me!”

She took an object in her paw and showed it to him. It was a hairpin made of two wool balls, one red and one yellow, having a few feathers attached to it. It was unskillfully made, as on the first try, but Nara’s smile completely obscured the imperfections.

“And we made more!” She then turned around to reveal a small pile of those pins. It was only then that Frozen Mountain noticed that both of them had such pins in their mane and tail. Seeing Nara wear such a thing would normally make Frozen go nuts, but she seemed so happy and innocent. A large smile covered her face and Frozen Mountain could not remember when he last saw her so happy. It was different from the fake smile she would normally put up for everyday ceremonies. She seemed genuinely happy. He then decided to completely ignore the chaos. He sighed and smiled.

“Aahah this is so fun! I wanna make you one too, especially for you!” She clapped her paws with excitement.

Frozen Mountain turned towards Black Sunset which sat next to him, she smiled and giggled, as if knowing everything that went through his mind in the past minutes.

They were polar opposites, but they both had one thing in common, and that was that they both loved Nara very much. After that day, Frozen started to accept that. Later that day Nara went all around the castle, giving hairpins to every servant. None of them ever took them off, cause Nara meant just as much to every one of them. The hairpins became a symbol of the Castle, worn by every of Nara’s servants. Over time, the meaning faded away and only the old servants can remember why they wore those. But the truth is that the new servants still share the same love for the Queen, even if they don’t remember what those hairpins mean.
