Stories of the Stars: Moonburn I

Delta stood next to Enchanted Waters, looking at the experiment room through a sturdy glass window. Her friend was tied up in a machine behind the unbreakable window. It was the experiment she prepared for all of her life. Delta knew every detail from Moonburn, she told her everything. Yet she was terrified looking at her now. She felt something was wrong. The mare sitting next to her, who they spent most of their life with, had so many secrets she hid from them, there was no trust to be had in her yet they were there, doing her will.

“Don’t worry Delta” she remembered Moonburn’s last words before entering the room. “It’ll be ok, I’ll get out safely and we’ll both live happily after.”

“What ‘living happily’?! You lied to me, didn’t you. You knew I wouldn’t agree with the actual experiment and you decided not to worry me! So now you’re there, tied up in those machines, thinking I still believe this will be ok! As if I don’t know what those machines actually do, I built them!” She thought to herself, staring desperately at her friend.

“And now this lunatic will push the button, and you’ll be done for!”

Enchanted Waters kept her sweet smile on her face. Nobody would think she was a crazy psychopath behind that mask she always wore, even in front of her victims. She did not care about saving the world, she only cared about her experiments, which just so happened to save the world. She pressed the button with no warning, without a single change in her expression.

Colors exploded behind the glass, Delta could not make anything out of it, just screams of despair coming from her dear friend. She desperately shifted her eyes to the mare next to her, hoping she could find some reason in her, but her eyes were captivated by the colors, her poker face fallen to reveal fascination, a large, pure smile, like that of a child.

“What are you doing to her!?” Delta screamed in despair.

“Magic!” Enchanted Waters spoke, without taking her eyes off her experiment.

Delta shook off her anger. There was no possible way to reason with the mad scientist. She took her tool bag and ran upstairs, towards the windows with thinner glass. She crashed her tool bag into a window, breaking it, then jumped through, forgetting she had wings, crushing down to the floor. She pulled out her chisel and launched herself with all of her strength at the amber building around Moonburn. She tried chipping off as much as she could, but with every bit she took off, twice as much would build up over it. And it wasn’t only Moonburn that got covered in it. It took just mere seconds for Delta’s hooves to get stuck. She couldn’t move. She hit her head against the amber in a desperate attempt to break Moonburn’s seal. But it was pointless. Moonburn’s amber prison became her own. With a last glimpse of her sight, she saw Enchanted Waters laughing hysterically in a trance. Then amber covered her eyes, taking away her sight.
