In the uneasiness of Starla's departure, grifix tried to find ways to cope with her not being there anymore. Some accepted it and looked forward to the new queen, but they had the same expectations of her as of Starla, a queen with thousands of years of experience. Some refused to accept her reign, and continued to worship Starla as a goddess, who even if she wasn't there anymore, would still watch over them. They refused to follow Beira's orders and rebelled against everything that was "traditional". They retreated in a corner of the Village and would speak ill of the queen every chance they had. They refused to take part in any of the old ceremonies, which, in their words, should have been held by Starla, and not just "a queen". Since she wasn't there, the ceremonies held no value. Amongst those ceremonies there was the Soul Linking ceremony. Refusing marriage, they were not bound by anybody, because Starla was the only one who could bind them. Or so they claimed.
Honeybee and Nile were children of those grifix. Not related by blood, but they were friends since they could remember. Dated at some points, but it never really worked out. Nile was also the sort to hook up with anybody, and be down for anything.
A few years before he and his friends left the Village, his mother had another kid, a little sister for Nile, whom he loved very much. She died the year before they left. It was a stupid death, something that could've been easily avoided if the queen was involved in the life of the Village, something that wouldn't have happened if the warriors did their jobs and if the Village wasn't so divided. He never showed much emotion but he started to loathe everything about that place. He never talked about it, and he still seemed the same old happy guy his friends knew.
At the time Steel and Sandy's house caught fire, all his friends kind of followed each other and left the Village. Sunbite left for Steel and Sandy's safety, Honeycomb left for her sister, and Spice left for honeycomb. Nile didn't seem like he had anybody to leave for, but he tagged along. He never told anyone but he was so relieved to leave that place. It was so out of character for him to hate, but he couldn't help it. He wouldn't tell them, but he did leave for someone, except that someone was no longer there...
In the Divided Camp he got much closer to his old friend, Bear, whom he knew for a long time, but never really got that close to. Bear clearly had a thing for him, and Nile was down for anything so it didn't take long for them to hook up. After that Nile fell hard for him, he loved the little guy. He never actually loved anybody before, it was such a strange feeling. It was healing to feel something else than numbness and anger. At least he knew that was his place to be.
His birth name was Nile Birch but he dropped his second name when he left the Village.
